Key Features
- Material: Most coral keycaps are crafted from high-quality, thick PBT material which is known for being more durable and resistant to the shine, wear, and fading that often affect ABS plastic keycaps over time.
- Design & Aesthetics: They feature a vibrant “Coral Sea” or “Ukiyo-e” (Japanese art style) theme, often incorporating teal and orange color schemes and intricate deep-sea designs. The colors are typically fade-resistant due to the manufacturing process.
- Legends: The legends (characters) on the keycaps are usually applied using a dye-sublimation process, where the ink is heated and absorbed into the PBT plastic, ensuring the characters will not wear off, even with heavy use.
- Durability: They are resistant to oils and grease from fingers, making them easy to clean and maintain their matte finish. Many also feature a waterproof and dustproof design due to the injection molding technology used.
- Typing Feel & Ergonomics:
- Profile: They come in various ergonomic profiles to reduce fatigue during extended use, such as the uniform height XDA profile or the sculpted Cherry profile.
- Texture & Sound: The PBT material gives the keycaps a slightly textured or matte feel, which many users prefer over smooth ABS. They also tend to produce a deeper, more muted “thock” sound when typed on, compared to the higher-pitched sound of typical ABS keycaps.
- Compatibility: They are generally available in full sets and are designed to be compatible with most mechanical keyboards that use MX-type switches (like Cherry MX, Gateron, Kailh, etc.).
